BASIC FACTS ABOUT USING PUBLIC TRANSPORT IN LISBON
  • You need a "a viva viagem card" (0,50 eur) to take the metro, bus (not turistic lines) or tram (except touristic lines) topped up with one of a following options:
  • card to be bought in the ticket machines in every metro entrances,
  • 6 eur allowing you to travel without limits within 24 hour after the first use (passing metro gate or taking a bus),
  • 5, 10 or 15 eur without time limits which gives you the possibility to travel for 1,25 eur per one metro journey including connections,  
  • otherwise a single journey costs 1,40 eur. 
  • you need to use your "viva viagem card" when you are entering metro station and leaving it,
  • metro working daily between 6.30 a.m and 1.00 a.m.
  • during the weekends and feasts most of stations having only one entrance open,
  • any doubts? There is a Metropolitan Lisboa desk at the entrance to any station.
  •  subway (metro) Subway in Lisbon  works every day between 6.30 a.m and 1.00 a.m. [ :(  ] 
    • These are 4  lines in Lisbon: Metro network
    • red (Linha Vermelha)
      • important stops:
        • Aeroporto - airport and the first stop for this line
        • Oriente - Oceanarium, Parques das Nacoes, Shopping Center Vasco da Gamma, bus and railway station Oriente
        • Alameda - connection with green line
        • Saldanha - connection with yellow line
        • S. Sebastiao - connection with blue line and last stop of this line
    • green (Linha Verde) 
      • important stops:
        • Alameda - connection with red line
        • Rossio: Praca da Figueira, Rua da Prata, Rossio railway station to go to Sintra
        • Baixa Chiado -  Baixa Chiado :), Largo Camoes, Cafe Brasileira
        • Cais do Sodre - railway station to go to Cascais, waterway station to go Setubal
    • yellow (Linha Amarela) 
      • important stops:
        • Campo Grande - connection with green line
        • Saldanha - connection with yellow line
        • Marques de Pombal - Parc Eduardo VII, Avenida Libertade
        • Rato - Jardim da Estrela
    • blue (Linha Azul) 
      • important stops:
        • Jardim Zoologico - Sete Rios railway and bus station to  take bus to Fatima
        • S. Sebastiao - connection with red line
        • Marques de Pombal - connection with yellow line, Parc Eduardo VII, Avenida Libertade
        • Restauradores - most famous place with restaurants, Rossio railwaystation
        • Baixa Chiado - Baixa Chiado, connection with green line, Rua  da Prata, Rua Augusta, Elevador Santa Justa, Carmo
        • Terreiro do Paco - Praca do Comercio
        • Santa Apolonia - Alfama, Santa Apolonia railway station to go to Santarem, Panteon Nacional, Museum of Fado
  • bus  (carris)
    • you use the same "viva viagem card" as for metro so one single travel costs 1,40 eur (to buy directly from a bus driver) or 1,25 eur if you're using zapping car or is included in your 24h ticket when buying it for 6 eur in a machine
    • validate your card when entering a bus
    • when you're travelling with more than one bus line within 1,5 h you will be debited only once 1,25 eur if using viva viagem card. Doesn't work as a combination with travelling by metro. 
    • when buying your ticket on board, a single one and valid only for one journey costs 1,80 eur
      • these are daytime and night lines. Some important lines:
    • 708 (map) from Aeroport (airport) or Oriente taking direction of Martim Moniz will bring you to the center of the Lisbon and taking the opposite direction to Parque das Nacoes - business quarter of Lisbon and Oceanarium
    • 208 (map) going from the airport through Avenida Almirante Reis, Rua da Palma, Martin Moniz Square to Cais do Sodre
    • 722 (map) from airport will bring you to Praca Londres (London Square), close to metro Alameda and Avenida Joao XXI
    • 744 (map) passing by airport, finishes and starts its route at Marques Pombal Square, within walking distance to many hotels and Avenida Libertade - Lisbon's Champs Elyses :)
    • 783 (map) going from the airport is directing to Amoreiras Commercial Center throuhg Saldanha (M), Picoas (M), Marques de Pombal (M)
    • 714 (map) from Praca da Figueira and Praca do Comercio to Belem and Mosteiro Jeronimos

  • trams Carris  = electrico (not touristic lines)
    • you need the same card as to take a bus or metro 
    • a ticket bought on board costs 2,85 eur for a single journey
    • pay attention on what is written on the front window of a tram as sometimes even a tram supposed to go the final stop, for some reasons like feast, processions, marches can be redirected to a closer destination
    • some important lines:
      • 15E (map) - from from Praca da Figueira and Praca do Comercio to Belem and Mosteiro Jeronimos, attention: sometimes on a back way goes only till Cais do Sodre
      • 28E (map) - serviced by the fabulous old looking yellow wagons, the symbols of Lisbon. This most famous line bringing you from Martim Moniz through Graca, Alfama, Baixa, Estrela to Prazerez is very crowded and many times it is worthy to wait for a next tram as they go by 2-3 at one time. 
        • TIP instead of waiting hours for 28e in a long queue at Martin Moniz square from where it starts, take this tram from Etrela for example in opposite direction means going from Prazeres to Martim Moniz. Probably you will enter the first one tram coming.

  • trains - to take a train you need a different card  to top up (travelling from Cais do Sodre, Rossio) or to buy your ticket at the desk (Santa Apolonia). Ticketing machines are very similar to these one at metro stations but here you will have to chose destination. Machines have menu in different languages and you can buy your ticket at a desk in all stations. More about in "Close to Lisbon"
